Onions Etc., Inc.
Onions, Etc. is owned by Derrell Kelso, Jr., a fifth-generation farmer. Derrell’s father migrated to California in 1960 from Merckal, Texas, where his father and grandfather were dry land farmers; Derrell’s uncle still farms there today. Derrell’s dad came to California as an employee of Chevron Chemical, known as Ortho, where he sold fertilizers and advised growers about horticultural issues. In 1969, the family started Kelso Truck Farm, where they grew five acres of Italian sweet onions, sweet corn, tomatoes, bell peppers, black eyed peas and many other crops for 300 families that canned and froze their fresh produce for the winter. Today, Derrell and his wife, Donna, own and operate Onions, Etc., where they farm, pack and repack close to $20 million worth of onions and specialty potatoes to more than 5,000 stores throughout the U.S. and Canada. Derrell’s family takes pride in supplying consumers with the best of the best: from the finest produce available to superior customer service. He is also deeply committed to rekindling the consumer/farmer relationship that has been such an important part of America’s heritage.
