Twenty years ago, Americans had a difficult time finding enough sweet onions to satisfy their cravings. The season was short, from spring to early summer, and only two main areas in the U.S. grew them. That’s when two onions brokers began a three-year quest to find just the right seed variety and place to grow super-sweet onions that Americans could enjoy all winter long. They chose a spot at the foothills of the Andes Mountains in Chile, where the rich, volcanic soil and perfect micro-climate were ideal for growing very sweet, mild (think tearless), flavorful onions. Their search and patience paid off with the introduction of the world-class OSOSweet onion.

Today, OsoSweet onions are grown in Chile and Weslaco, TX, providing the most consistent sweet onion available. OSO Sweet onions contain up to one-third more sugar than other sweet onions, and their pleasant flavor and crisp texture make them a favorite of home and restaurant chefs. The same team of dedicated agronomists who pioneered the OSOSweet still watch over the growing of each onion, and the company employs carefully monitored quality controls from field to the end consumer to ensure product safety, as well as consistency in taste, color and size. OSO Sweet onions are imported by Saven Corporation in Waterford, MI.  They’re available from January through May and remain the premiere sweet onion in the winter months.
