Onions, Etc. is owned by Derrell Kelso, Jr., a fifth-generation farmer. Derrell’s father migrated to California in 1960 from Merckal, Texas, where his father and grandfather were dry land farmers; Derrell’s uncle still farms there today. Derrell’s dad came to California as an employee of Chevron Chemical, known as Ortho, where he sold fertilizers and advised growers about horticultural issues. In 1969, the family started Kelso Truck Farm, where they grew five acres of Italian sweet onions, sweet corn, tomatoes, bell peppers, black eyed peas and many other crops for 300 families that canned and froze their fresh produce for the winter.
