Got Nine?  Get Your Mixed Fruit & Veggie Box Today!

According to the newest dietary guidelines, shooting for 9 servings of fruits and vegetables each day is a goal worth setting.  Besides the obvious health benefits, having a Mixed Fruit & Veggie Box delivered to your home helps support local agriculture, keeping American farmers in business.

Each season brings delicious combinations of fruits and veggies to enjoy “farm fresh to you.”

Right now as we inch closer to summer, you will be enjoying crisp, juicy Fuji Apples, Bosc Pears,

Cippollini Onions as well as Navel Oranges, Lettuce, Beefsteak Tomatoes, Apricots, Summer Squash,

Kale, early Strawberries, Cherries, Cucumbers and Small Turnips in your Mixed Fruit & Veggie Box.

Bosc Pears:  The Elegant Fruit with Early American Roots

Bosc Pears are the crowning glory of the orchard in May through October.  Hailing from Europe in the early 1800s, the Bosc Pear made its American debut in 1830s.  Their firm, dense flesh allows them to hold up well in your favorite baking, broiling or poaching recipes.  Unlike other varieties, the Bosc is ready to bite into even though giving it a slight squeeze will not “give” to the expected degree that other varieties do when ripe.   However you decide to incorporate this delicious, slightly spicy, fruit into your meals, you’ll be adding Vitamin C as well as some of the tastiest fiber when you eat them with their skins on!  For more information on the Bosc Pear, visit  http://www.usapears.com/

FUJI APPLES: You Don’t Have to Scale Mt. Fuji to Enjoy this American Classic!

If your Mixed Fruit & Veggies box has Fuji Apples, consider yourself lucky!  Not only beautiful on the outside with its stripes of yellows and reds, but beautiful on the inside!  Their firm, crunchy flesh is satisfying as a snack but hearty enough to use in pies, fritters and your Grandma’s famous applesauce recipe!  Originating from Japan and named for the eponymous mountain, the Fuji Apple has been keeping the doctor away since 1980 in the US and can be enjoyed Fall through late Spring.  How will you enjoy YOUR Fuji?  For new ideas, visit http://www.usapple.org/index.php!

The Cippolini Onion:  Bellissimo and Delicioso!

The Cippolini Onion can be considered the smaller, flatter, disc-shaped Italian cousin of the yellow onion.   Underneath its papery outer skins lies a firm, sweet onion that keeps its shape when roasted, boiled or grilled.  The Cippolini Onion is often given a place of honor as a stand-alone side dish alongside  holiday roasts and quality cuts of meat.  Their sweetness is especially enhanced when carmelized with balsamic vinegar.  Buon Appetito!
