Canning

Canning is such fun, if you have not canned before I suggest you get certified by a local class.  For example you can google: your county extension office, your master gardener has classes, or just google your town and certified canning classes.  After you’ve learned to can fruits and vegetables it is awesome!  Here is my mom’s recipe for sweet and dill pearl onions.  We are giving them away to friends, etc. for Christmas season this year (and saving a few for ourselves).

Canning your own is a wonderful and fun hobby and during these days a great way to save a lot of money!  My mom while we were growing up used to put up 100’s of courts of sweet corn relish, onions, Pickles, jams, jelly’s, peaches, pears, asparagus, artichokes, fish, and much much more.  When times are difficult, believe me people love to get a gift you’ve made it is very special.  Put it this way, I would rather have a friend invite me over for dinner and cook for me (that is very special) vs. someone take me out to dinner at a restaurant.  Both acts very kind, the first though more personal. 

You can spruce these gifts them up and hand write what is in the jar and put a thoughtful note on the outside (on a sticker).  Cost = time, very thoughtful and a wonderful way to serve those special people in your life.  My mom is the master at this!  Thanks mom
